Chai tea originally hails from India and is now a popular beverage all over the world. A blend of black tea and spices, chai is warming and contains herbs that support digestion. Making your own unique blend is easy, and can be packaged up to make a homemade Christmas present.
8 green cardamom pods
3 star anise
1/2 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
1 tablespoon fennel seeds
1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
2 3-inch cinnamon sticks
3 tablespoons chopped candied ginger
1/2 cup loose black tea
(Makes about 1/2 pint, perfect for a small glass mason jar.)
Preheat oven to 350°. Split the cardamom pods open and combine with peppercorns, fennel, cloves and cinnamon. Spread in a single layer on an oven tray. Toast until the spices become fragrant (5-10 minutes). Remove and cool, then crush lightly with a rolling pin or mortar and pestle. Blend with the candied ginger and tea, and spoon into 1/2 pint mason jar.
Include brewing instructions on the tag.
How to Brew Chai: For 1 cup of chai, Add 1-2 tablespoons Chai Mix to 1 cup boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes, strain, add 1/4 cup of milk. Sweeten with honey or sugar to taste.
