You know, that sticky weed that twines through hedges, gardens, and forest floors. It is considered by many herbalists to be the best tonic for the lymphatic system, as it assists the lymph nodes in cleansing out toxins. Since it also acts as a diuretic, it’s an excellent herb choice for detoxification and cleansing. Because of these properties and its high silica content, cleavers is great for supporting healthy skin. It’s also very rich in vitamin C and many other minerals, so this is one weed you might want to spare from the compost pile!

Cleavers can be used externally as a poultice, and is quite versatile as a food plant, too. They can be made into tea, chopped up and cooked like spinach, added to smoothies, or juiced and taken as a cleansing shot. To do this, simply combine a handful of cleavers with a little bit of filtered water in a blender and blend until smooth. Filter through a fine mesh strainer. It’s especially delicious with a splash of lemon juice and a pinch of sea salt, served on ice.

Tahini-Date Energy Balls (modified from @dishingouthealth ) - makes about 12!

1. Heat 1/3 cup tahini (or sub almond butter), 3 tablespoons honey, and 2 tablespoons coconut oil in a saucepan on medium-low heat.
2. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in 1/4 cup Blood Sugar Support powder until powder is dissolved.
3. Transfer it into a large bowl, and stir in 1 cup quick oats, 5 finely chopped pitted dates, 1/4 cup chopped pistachios, cashews, or other nut, and 1/4 teaspoon sea salt.
4. Mix it by hand until everything is well combined. Form into balls, roughly the size of a ping-pong ball, and roll each ball around in a bowl of sesame or hemp seeds to coat the outsides.
5. Let freeze for about 45 minutes, then enjoy!

We’ve been working on an organic veggie garden for our interns to glean from this summer. We’re feeling particularly excited about these purple beauties that were put in the ground today.

Purple variety potatoes have significantly higher polyphenols, anthocyanins, and chlorogenic acids than other varieties of potato. All of these mean healthy blood pressure, and greater antioxidant capacity. Potatoes in general are a rich source of potassium and vitamin C. Of course, preparation is key 🔑 - we’re talking whole potatoes prepared nutritiously, not refined potato starch deep-fried in vegetable oil! •
